In today’s computing world, Information Systems are a basis for running many businesses and organizations at all levels. Their importance and contribution to the success has become very fundamental that much more investment is being made in developing Information Systems than was the case at the beginning of the information age. What are Information Systems anyway? Different sources may have slightly differing definitions, however in relation to Microfinance, an appropriate definition would be; a set of ICT components for collecting, creating, storing, processing, and distributing information within the Microfinance Institution. The various components of the system may have different roles that can be managed by completely different teams while serving different customer requirements.
The ADBanking Information System is a Core Banking System that was developed by ADFinance specifically for Microfinance Institutions. This system has the ability to transform service delivery and improve management of services at the Microfinance while offering advanced ICT related services to their customers. The Value of the ADBanking system lies in its integrated nature with four core interlinked modules that include the following:
1. Customer Management Core Module (Know Your Customer) that manages corporations (formal business and other organizational entities) or Individuals who can be members of groups such as lending groups & informal groups.
2. Savings Core Module that supports the savings policy of a Microfinance Institution, by allowing the management of unlimited number of savings products of various types such as Current accounts (deposits and withdrawals); Savings plans (limited term, with several deposits and one withdrawal); Term deposits (One deposit and one withdrawal after a pre-determined period of time); Additionally savings products of those types can be configured based on various criteria, such as interest calculation methods, type of fees, and more.
3. Loans Management Core Module allows configuration of unlimited number of loan products based on several criteria like interest calculation methods (flat interests, decreasing interests, decreasing interests with fixed principal); Periodicity (daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, quarterly, annually); & Types of fees.
4. Accounting Core Module allows generation of accounting transactions from operational modules such as savings or from the accounting module itself. Other main features of this module include: Web Based (no client software on work stations); Real-time multi-branch (clients do transaction from any branch); Rich reporting features (more than a hundred built in reports and custom reports generating tools).
The modular design of the system makes it possible to utilize only parts of the system required at different levels of migrations and creates a possibility to integrate other third party systems in order to extend the functionality. This implies that the Microfinance Institutions have the ability to keep up with technology by expanding the functionally of the ADBanking System as the demands of their customers increase. Besides that, the ability to host this Information System in the Cloud further gives the Microfinance the leverage it needs to make the required return on investment; the teams at the Microfinance Institutions can fully exploit the Information System without much capital investment for equipment.
