The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) held its 24th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGM) in Kigali from 28th June to 1st July 2017 with participation by some of Africa’s most high-profile political and business leaders, joined by leading international experts.

The AGM and its related activities, which was scheduled to take place at the Kigali Convention Centre, was held under the overarching theme: Boosting Intra-African Trade and Integration.

Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, and Anastase Murekezi, the Prime Minister, attended, along with Claver Gatete, the Minister of Finance and Economic Planning.

The AGM activities included two days of seminars on 28th and 29th June which explored the prospects for accelerating economic development and transformation of African economies through trade. They were followed on June 30th by the meeting of the Afreximbank Advisory Group on Trade Finance and Export Development in Africa, focusing on Africa’s trade opportunities in a world of rising protectionism.

An investment forum, hosted by the Rwandese Government, and a trade exhibition also took place on 30th June while the AGM activities were concluded on 1st July with the formal Annual General Meeting of Shareholders of the Bank and an African leaders’ roundtable.

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) is the foremost Pan-African multilateral financial institution devoted to financing and promoting intra and extra-African trade. The Bank was established in October 1993 by African governments, African private and institutional investors, and non-African investors. Its two basic constitutive documents are the Establishment Agreement, which gives it the status of an international organization, and the Charter, which governs its corporate structure and operations. Since 1994, it has approved more than $51 billion in credit facilities for African businesses, including about $10.3 billion in 2016. Afreximbank had total assets of $9.4 billion as at 30th April, 2016 and is rated BBB+ (GCR), Baa1 (Moody’s), and BBB- (Fitch). The Bank is headquartered in Cairo.
